Local NHS trust strengthens commitment to training and education with new facility
South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust has made a significant investment to provide a dedicated new training and education facility, Acorn House, which is located nearby to Warwick Hospital.
After acquiring Acorn House in 2021, the Trust developed the site and following extensive renovations it is now a modern standalone facility which provides vital teaching and training space for clinical teams, undergraduate students and apprentices. The site also provides office accommodation for community-based teams.
The education and training space offers a Simulation Suite which provides a safe environment for staff and students to learn, whilst providing an experience as close to reality as possible. This specialist suite enables multidisciplinary teams to learn from incidents and trial new ways of working. The ability to adapt the space to teach a range of skills, within different scenarios, supports on-going clinical development.
Acorn House was officially opened today (Wednesday 10 May) by Professor Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick.
In August 2022 the Trust’s name changed, becoming South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust. This change reflects its ongoing commitment to working with higher education and increasing access to research.
Glen Burley, Chief Executive said: “I am really proud to see this new facility officially open. It is an example of our on-going dedication to developing the teams we have at the Trust and importantly the future NHS workforce. We have very strong relationships with higher education and Acorn House is going to strengthen these relationships further and support our ambition to enhance clinical education and research development. Creating a culture which harnesses research opportunities is a key part of our Trust strategy, and this is a fantastic step towards that.”
Professor Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick, commented: “I was delighted to officially open Acorn House, which is an excellent example of how Warwick is working with the NHS to train the next generation of doctors and healthcare workers. These new facilities will be invaluable to our medical students, enhancing care and research while also offering new training methods. Projects like Acorn House make me very confident that the relationship between Warwick and our partners within the NHS will continue to go from strength to strength.”
