People in Coventry and Warwickshire urged to choose the right care during heatwave

Local people are being urged to use health services wisely as hospitals across Coventry and Warwickshire are extremely busy.

On Monday, July 23, the Met Office issued a level 3 warning for heatwave conditions until Friday, July 27. The highest temperatures are predicted to occur on Thursday in parts of the region.

Dr Chris Hetherington, Clinical Director for Emergency Medicine at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust said:

“Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments across Coventry and Warwickshire are extremely busy at the moment as result of the prolonged hot weather we’ve been experiencing.

“This means we’re seeing a rise in the number of people with illnesses associated with hot weather, particularly dehydration which can lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as urosepsis.

“It is really important to stay hydrated by drinking a least two litres of non-alcoholic fluid each day – caffeine-free options like water are the best option. If people do feel they are suffering from dehydration – symptoms include extreme thirst, dizziness and/or headaches – it’s best to move to a cool place, rehydrate and seek help from NHS 111 or their local pharmacy if symptoms persist.”

Hot weather can be particularly tough for people with long-term health conditions or the elderly so it is really important to you check in on friends, neighbours and family members who may be vulnerable during the heatwave.

Pharmacists offer expert advice for many common summer ailments such as hay fever, insect stings and dehydration. Some pharmacies in Coventry and Warwickshire are open as late as midnight and you don’t need an appointment.
