The Princess Royal opens new hospital in the heart of Stratford
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal officially opened Stratford Hospital on Tuesday 25 September 2018.
South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust’s new hospital treated its first patients in July 2017, following a £22million development creating a state-of-the-art healthcare facility.
During the day The Princess Royal was given a guided tour by South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust’s Chief Executive Glen Burley. The event was also an opportunity for HRH to meet clinicians, patients and key fundraisers.
To support the new hospital, the Trust ran a fundraising appeal to raise money for enhancing the facilities and assisting in providing patients with the latest equipment. The Cancer and Eye Hospital Appeal exceeded its £1million target thanks to the tremendous support from communities across south Warwickshire and the difference it has made is evident throughout the site.
Glen Burley, Chief Executive at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust said “I am delighted that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has officially opened Stratford Hospital. The new hospital offers exceptional facilities for patients, relatives and staff so it was great to celebrate this with a Royal event. We are all very proud of the development and the difference it is already making to the lives of people in Stratford and the surrounding communities. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that made it possible; staff, fundraisers and donors.”
The building is approximately twice the size of the current hospital and houses a cancer services unit on the top floor. This area is known as The Rigby Cancer Unit, following an extremely generous donation from The Rigby Foundation. The first floor of the hospital is a dedicated eye unit which includes a state-of-the-art operating theatre making day procedures, such as cataracts, much more accessible. The ground floor is home to Café Lomas, a health and wellbeing hub. Café Lomas provides information and advice on a range of health and wellbeing services. In May 2018, the Trust also introduced diagnostic services at Stratford Hospital, with an MRI suite on the ground floor.
