Regulator’s survey signals patient satisfaction with emergency care in south Warwickshire

South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust’s Emergency Department at Warwick Hospital has been voted one of the best in the country by patients in a survey carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England.

The National Urgent and Emergency Care Survey was carried out between November 2020 and March 2021. It involved inviting around 41,000 patients throughout the country to share views on their experiences of care across a wide variety of measures, including being listened to by their clinician, being involved in decision making, receiving clear explanations of conditions and treatment plans and the safety and cleanliness of the clinical environment.

The Trust was in the Top 10 of all A&E departments nationally and scored particularly highly for treating patients with respect and dignity, the quality of treatment and care provided, the administration of testing and reporting results and overall patient experience – with ratings against these measures being higher than the majority of the 126 Trusts included in the survey.

Commenting on the survey results Glen Burley, Chief Executive of the Trust, said:

“We’re delighted to see the results of this survey which confirm that the Trust continues to earn the Outstanding CQC rating awarded to us in 2019.

“The survey is a really important tool that helps us to recognise what we’re doing particularly well as a provider of emergency care and offers an opportunity for us to continually improve our performance against every measure of patient experience and satisfaction.

“We’re performing strongly against all of the criteria evaluated in this year’s survey and have increased our scores against a number of measures since the last survey was carried out in 2018. With the enormous challenges brought by the pandemic over the past 20 months or so it is especially heartening to see that we have been able to maintain the high standards of care on which we pride ourselves during this difficult time. It is testament to the remarkable efforts and dedication of colleagues working in our Emergency Department and throughout the entire Trust, and I would like to thank our staff for everything they do in the service of our patients.”
