You won’t be sick as a parrot with SWFT

South Warwickshire Foundation NHS Trust is bringing a new meaning to ‘getting plastered’ at Christmas.

Senior Plaster Technician Ade Gbadebo is spreading seasonal cheer throughout the fracture clinic with a range of innovative ideas.

Ade, who joined the Trust in March this year, is keen to make hospital a more child-friendly place.

Little patients who need a plaster cast can relax amongst a tropical scene complete with parrots, flowers and trees.

Each patient receives a cuddly toy knitted by a friend of the ward and they have a choice of different glitters and designs for their cast, including bows and Christmas trees. When older patients see some of the cast designs, they want one too.

Ade explains: “I want the children to be happy and relaxed when they come in for treatment, not faced with a blank and intimidating room. I’m not artistic in real life but I like to be creative in my job. Thanks have to go to the staff of the children’s ward, who have been really supportive in making the experience better for young patients.

“Children may be upset before they come in but once they’re here, they relax and love being part of the fun. Hospitals can be a scary environment for children but presenting things in a child-friendly way takes their mind off it”.
