Pathology

What we do

Pathology services are provided by the Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service (CWPS), a network providing diagnostic tests for inpatients and outpatients served by South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, George Eliot Hospital Nuneaton, University Hospital Coventry and Burton Hospitals NHS Trust.

Our services include blood sciences, microbiology and histopathology departments. We also provide a phlebotomy (blood-taking) service.

We provide a 24/7 service to clinicians with many of our tests provided within one hour. Our teams include consultant pathologists, biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and biomedical assistants.

The Blood Sciences Laboratory analyses blood samples, including cell numbers and cell types, plus a large number of chemical constituents in the blood that provide vital information on body and organ function. Blood transfusion provides red cells and other blood products.

Histopathology involves the study of tissue samples taken from patients, either during an operation, or in outpatient clinics or post-mortem examinations. Microscopic examination of the sample provides diagnosis of a wide variety of diseases and abnormalities, such as inflammatory disorders, benign growths and cancers.

Microbiology and virology departments analyse a wide variety of tissue samples and body fluids to enable the diagnosis and management of diseases caused by micro-organisms, i.e. bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and parasites.
