Our services and how to access them

Assessment

The assessment will be tailored to identify your child's difficulties and may include some of the following:

  • Musculoskeletal assessment
  • Neuromuscular assessment
  • Chronic fatigue and pain syndrome
  • Gross motor skill acquisition
  • Developmental milestones
  • Developmental Coordination Disorder
  • Plagiocephaly and torticollis assessment
  • Gait assessment
  • Equipment needs, including orthotics and footwear
  • Your child may be assessed at home, school or nursery, or at one of our clinics, depending on the nature of their needs. The decision whether to offer further support from physiotherapy is based on the outcome of assessment, the impact of the difficulty on the child's life and the likelihood of being able to achieve change at this time.

    Interventions

If your child is identified as being likely to benefit from physiotherapy, intervention may take one or more of the following forms:

  • Written advice
  • Individual therapy sessions, carried out by an Physiotherapist or a Therapy Assistant/Technical Instructor
  • Advice to schools on equipment, footwear and support
  • Provision of footwear or lower limb splints
  • Advice and further referral to podiatry or orthotics or as appropriate
  • Joint working with other professionals i.e. Occupational Therapy, key workers, Education etc.
  • Schools (core service)

We have physiotherapy teams based in special schools across Warwickshire. Children and young people who attend a special school and have been referred to our service, will receive the majority of their treatment in school. The physiotherapy teams work alongside school staff to promote the integration of physiotherapy, postural care and physical wellbeing into the daily school routine.

If the referral meets our service criteria, the case is either placed on our waiting list or allocated to a Physiotherapist depending on referral status, which is determined by level of risk.
