Family Health and Lifestyles Services recognised in Coventry awards

On Wednesday 29 July the Coventry Health and Wellbeing Awards took place as a virtual ceremony. Teams from South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust’s Family Health and Lifestyles Services were shortlisted a staggering 8 times, with their Coventry School Nursing Team scooping the prize for Innovator of the Year and their Infant Feeding and Stop Smoking in Pregnancy teams being highly commended in Digital Innovation. The Together We Can group and Sandra Curran was also highly commended for work done jointly with the SEND service, supporting children with their development.

The awards celebrate the hard work that goes on across Coventry to improve health and wellbeing with awards. The Coventry School Nursing Team won the award for their innovative approach to supporting the wellbeing of year 6 students through relaxation sessions. The relaxation sessions were put together following an increase in demand for support with emotional wellbeing and an increase in anxiety. The hour long sessions cover physical relaxation including stretching and the importance of relaxing the physical body as well as mentally relaxing through mindfulness. The session includes a relaxing story and leaving teachers with tools to continue to offer relaxation on an on-going basis. This can be delivered both virtually and in person within the schools.

The event also recognises a ‘Health Hero’, which was awarded to Annemarie Atkins, one of the Trust’s Infant Feeding Support staff. Annemarie won this prestigious award for her selfless voluntary work to improve the breastfeeding support available to women in Coventry and nationally. This has involved volunteering at two family hubs and on a national breastfeed helpline. Her role as a breastfeeding and infant feeding champion aims to reduce health inequalities and raising awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.

Anne Coyle, Managing Director at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for all the teams and individuals involved. I am so pleased that their hard work and enthusiasm has been recognised as they are all so committed to improving the lives of young people and families in Coventry. It has been a particularly challenging time for these services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but that has not deterred their dedication for providing first class services and has encouraged new ways of working around their use of technology to try and limit the impact Coronavirus has had on their service users. This is an exciting time for Family Health and Lifestyles Services and I will look forward to seeing even more innovations from them in the future.”
