Nurse’s dedication recognised with Queen’s Nurse Award
A member of staff at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT) has recently been presented with a Queen’s Nurse Award.
Johanna Riley who works as a District Nurse as a member of SWFT’s Leamington Spa District Nursing team was nominated for an award for her dedication, commitment and quality of care.
Johanna’s NHS career started at the age of 19 when she was employed as a cleaner before soon becoming a nursing auxiliary and progressing on to be a fully qualified nurse. Dedicating her entire adult life to NHS service, Johanna continually developed her clinical skills and professional qualifications. This, along with her experience has lead Johanna to be labelled “the ultimate role model for junior and student nurses” by Sarah Handley, the clinical lead who nominated her for the award.
Just as important as the opinions of Johanna’s colleagues are those of her patients so The Queen’s Nursing Institute, the organisation that presents the awards, sought feedback from some of the people she has cared for. They all spoke of Johanna highly with one patient commenting that she is a special person which made his experience a positive one, adding that he felt safe in her care as she is highly knowledgeable and skilled in her field.
Johanna said: “I was extremely shocked and honoured to have been nominated. I feel very proud to have received such a prestigious award and the title of Queen’s Nurse. To have been recognised for my hard work and dedication fills me with pride. It motivates me to further progress in my career and provide a high standard of care to patients.”
Helen Lancaster, Director of Nursing at SWFT said: “We’re very proud of Johanna for being presented with a Queen’s Nurse Award. It acts as recognition for the dedication she shows to our profession, caring for patients and helping to develop our younger nurses so they can also deliver outstanding care in the community.
As an organisation The Queen’s Nursing Institute works to improve the nursing care of people in their own homes. It does this by developing Queen's Nurses who are committed to high standards of care in the community, helping them to make improvements in practice and to act as leaders and role models to others. It also influences healthcare policies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and funds project that improve patient care.
