Choir singing to raise spirits and funds for CERU

The Central Brain Injury Unit (CERU) based at Leamington Spa Hospital has started a choir to raise funds for the unit.

Marcela Newburn, who is a close family member a patient on CERU, decided to start up the choir after seeing research showing the benefits of music associated with the recovery of brain injury patients.

The choir is made up of patients, families, friends and members of staff from the Unit. The group meet regularly in the dining room on Chadwick ward, one of the two wards that make up CERU. The aim of the group is to raise £1000 to buy musical equipment for the patients to use.

Marcela, upon talking about her motivation behind the choir, commented: “We believe that music helps brain injury patients to increase their mental wellbeing and aids in speeding up recovery. I wanted to do something with the people at CERU to try and boost morale whilst also raising money to make enhancements to this amazing unit”.

The group are practicing for their debut performance at the annual Leamington Hospital summer fete on Friday 30 June in the gardens. Their songs include classics such as ‘Stand by me’, ‘Dancing in the moonlight’ and ‘Your Song’ by Elton John.
