Conversation tea party continues to draw a crowd

On 30 June Speech and Language Therapists at Leamington Spa Hospital hosted their annual conversation tea party. The event which took place on Feldon Ward was aimed at former in-patients continuing their recovery from a stroke.

Many of us take communication for granted but for people recovering from a stroke, conversation can be extremely difficult. The tea party gives those attending the chance to practise their communication skills in a relaxed and friendly environment. Communication aids, volunteers and members of the Speech and Language Team were on hand to help provide cues for conversation amongst the guests.

Speech and Language Therapist Nicola Hughes explains why the event is important: “It’s reassuring for people to know they are not alone when it comes to finding communication difficult. We don’t want people to feel isolated or alone in dealing with their communication needs so by inviting them back it lets us see how they are getting on. Recovery from a stroke does not stop once a person is discharged from hospital so we want to show our support to those continuing their rehabilitation in the community.”
