DadPad® app relaunches in Coventry

The DadPad® app is an easy-to-use resource that has been developed with the NHS to provide support and guidance for new dads and dads-to-be. Together with the DadPad® books, the resource aims to help dads prepare for and transition into new parenthood.

First launched across Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire in 2021, with the support of the Children’s Community Services team within South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, the DadPad® app licence for the three areas has subsequently been renewed to ensure continuing support for expectant and new dads across the region.

Over the next few months there will be re-launch events in each region, starting today with Coventry.

What is the DadPad® app?

The DadPad® app aims to provide new dads with the information and support that they need during this challenging period of their lives. In addition to ‘baby care basics’ – such as nappy changing, coping with crying, safer sleep, washing and bathing baby, holding and handling baby, and infant feeding – the app also contains information on other crucial topics such as bonding with baby, supporting yourself and your partner, perinatal mental health, home safety and first aid.

The intention behind all of this is to help dads gain in confidence, feel included and involved as a new parent, and be an active and engaged co-parent alongside baby’s mum. It’s also been designed to help build and develop a relationship of trust and confidence between dad and the frontline perinatal healthcare professionals, bringing dad into settings that he’s traditionally and historically been excluded from.

Encouraging and supporting greater involvement by dads from the very beginning of each new life not only helps ensure that babies get the best start in life, but it also brings many advantages to the wider family, and beyond.

The apps for the region are also each packed with details of local and national support groups, helplines and service providers relevant to dads and families transitioning to new parenthood, so dad truly has a ‘one stop advice shop’ to turn to at any time, day or night.

New developments

Since it was first commissioned in Warwickshire, the team behind DadPad® have also developed a number of exciting new resources, including the Co-ParentPad©, a hard-copy resource for LGBTQI+ non-birthing parents, ensuring equality and equity of provision and support for ALL new parents.

There is also a new-look, new app platform, with additional features built from feedback from existing app users, including more user-friendly, searchable and saveable content, which has been designed to provide a more personalised learning process for the user. There’s also a community group area which will help dads connect and explore the mysteries of new fatherhood together, as well as providing a source of vital feedback to local perinatal (0-2) services on the views and needs of the families that they are supporting. These suggestions will crucially help shape services for new dads of the future.

Julian Bose, CEO and founder at DadPad, said: "We’re so thankful that we have the opportunity to continue our mission in Coventry, in partnership with the fantastic local teams. We’re particularly excited to now have the new app platform in place here, making us even better placed to listen to the views and needs of new fathers, which we can feed back to local new-family-focused organisations and systems. This information, together with the Co-ParentPad, will all help those services to truly consider and serve the specific needs of the WHOLE family when it comes to pregnancy, birth and early parenthood in Coventry."
