Enhanced environment provides comfort for cancer patients

Cancer patients receiving care at Warwick Hospital’s Aylesford Unit are benefiting from a major refurbishment of the facility.

The project covers a number of areas which impact the patient experience with significant upgrades to the building, fixtures and fittings, furniture and equipment. Changes made to the Outpatient Clinic Suite will result in improved dignity and confidentiality for patients while upgrades to the Chemotherapy will aid greater privacy.

Research suggests that the environment in which patients receive treatment has an impact on their recovery so a lot of effort has gone in to making the Aylesford Unit more comfortable for those receiving chemotherapy as well as loved ones providing much needed support. A conservatory has been built to provide a light, airy space for additional seating. Further improvements will include the installation of artwork and a music system and flooring will also be replaced.

The refurbishment has been made possible following investment by the Rigby Foundation, the charitable organisation set up by local entrepreneur Sir Peter Rigby. Stratford Hospital’s Rigby Unit was funded by the Rigby Foundation and has offered first class facilities to cancer patients since it opened just over a year ago. The Trust aims to expand this to its Warwick based oncology services through its continued partnership with Sir Peter Rigby which has also helped to fund cancer research projects and staffing. Additional funding for the Aylesford Unit has been provided by the Trust’s registered charity ‘SWFT Charity’ which has received legacy donations from generous ex-patients.

Carole Connor, Cancer Nurse Consultant said: “We’re extremely grateful for the continued support of the Rigby Foundation as it helps to provide the enhancements that can make a real difference. Chemotherapy patients can spend a lot of time with us and the treatment can be draining both physically and mentally. This is why having a comfortable and pleasant environment for patients and their relatives is so beneficial.

Sir Peter Rigby added: “I’m very pleased to see the improvements made to the Aylesford Unit, all of the recent work has transformed it. Looking around, I can see a real attention to detail in creating an environment that is comfortable for patients and their loved ones. It’s a pleasure to be able to provide funds to enhance the facility so it complements the fantastic work of the dedicated Aylesford Unit team.”
