Hospital staff saddle up in support of World Stroke Day

To mark World Stroke Day, South Warwickshire NHS Foundation held events at two of their hospitals that provide care to people affected by stroke.

Staff at Leamington Spa Hospital’s Feldon Stroke Unit organised a virtual cycle event in partnership with the Stroke Association. The challenge was to cycle the distance from Leamington Spa to Paris in just 5 days. The challenge was open to all regardless of age or ability and in total 124 people took to the saddle. Notable participants included Helen Lancaster the Director of Nursing for the Trust as well as a 5 year old visitor and a 91 year old patient. Andie Lees (Clinical Psychologist) and Hazel Glover (Specialist Dietitian) were on hand to raise awareness and to help motivate those taking part.

In addition to the cycling, Feldon Ward also celebrated its 10 year anniversary, marking a decade of providing specialist stroke rehabilitation and care to patients across Warwickshire.

A bake off competition and cake sale was held at Warwick Hospital where an information stand was hosted by staff from the range of disciplines involved in stroke care. Over £400 was raised which was combined with funds raised at Leamington Spa Hospital to donate over £1000 to the Stroke Association.

Priti Mistry, Specialist Physiotherapist, who helped organise the cycle event said: “We have been amazed by the enthusiasm and support that we have received, we aimed to reach around 400 miles but we ended up covering twice that distance thanks to the dedication of patients, visitors and staff. Our partners at the Stroke Association have been a great help and we would also like to offer thanks to Aubrey Allen and Sainsbury’s for donations of prizes won by the visitor, patient and staff members that cycled the furthest.”
