The Rigby Foundation helps to develop local cancer care
On Wednesday 29 June 2016 the Rigby Foundation hosted the first annual Rigby Awards at Mallory Court Hotel.
The Rigby Foundation has donated £500,000 over five years to champion innovative cancer care.
Following an extremely generous initial donation last year of £250,000 towards the dedicated cancer unit at the new Stratford Hospital, The Rigby foundation has created and sponsored a new award to encourage better ways of delivering cancer care in the local community.
Clinicians at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust presented their proposed research and development projects to a panel of judges. The successful bids were then awarded funding from the Rigby Foundation to carry out this vital work in cancer care.
During the event, four projects received the prestigious award;
- Dr Anton Borg, Consultant Haematologist, who will be carrying out research on Outpatient Induction Chemotherapy
- Carole Connor, Clinical Nurse Consultant and Dr Nawaz Walji, Consultant Oncologist, will both be research early breast cancer and its association with vitamin D deficiency
- Mr Sean Ramcharan, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, who will be conducting research if the One-Stop Nodal Assessment (OSNA) improves the detection of lymph node metastases in Colorectal Cancer
- Dr Rakesh Sinha, Consultant Radiologist, will be working on the prediction of rectal tumour response to Chemoradiotherapy on diffusion weighted MRI.
Glen, Burley, Chief Executive at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are extremely grateful for The Rigby Foundation’s generosity. Their support will help to make the new Rigby Cancer Unit in Stratford, a centre of excellence that is accessible for the local communities of South Warwickshire.”
Sir Peter Rigby explained on behalf of the Rigby Foundation: “In addition to donating £250,000 towards the dedicated Cancer Unit at the new Stratford Hospital, the Rigby Foundation wanted to add to its future reputation and substance. That is why we have created and sponsored the Rigby Foundation Awards, which support and encourage better ways of delivering cancer care in the local community.”
“Clinicians and staff responded by putting forward ideas to improve cancer treatment and care locally. Glen Burley, Dr Charles Ashton, Russell Hardy and myself met as a panel to assess their applications and the first Rigby Foundation Awards will finance and enable four innovative projects.”
The new hospital is going to make a huge difference to local people in Stratford and the surrounding areas. To support the development there is a £1million fundraising appeal, which the Rigby Foundation donated £250,000 towards in 2015. All money raised will be used to make enhancements to the new hospital, which will make treatment more comfortable for patients.
