Sight-saving Surgeon receives recognition

A local consultant at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT) has been recognised for his extensive and ongoing work in improving the sight of people who suffer from a range of eye conditions.

Consultant Ophthalmologist Gary Misson has been awarded an honorary professorship by Aston University, Birmingham. The professorship was presented to Prof. Misson in recognition of his long-standing collaboration with the university’s School of Life and Health Sciences (Division of Optometry) in addition to his research activities.

Prof. Misson has undertaken research into various aspects of human vision over many years and is showing no signs of stopping. He has recently been awarded a grant from the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons for a clinical study into a revolutionary way of detecting early macular disease, such as age related macular degeneration.

The cutting-edge research has been granted full approval by the NHS Research Authority and Ethics Committee and will be carried out at Warwick Hospital and the new Stratford Hospital. Enthusiastic staff at both sites are eagerly awaiting the start of the study in early September. The Trust’s new site, located in the heart of Stratford upon Avon, has a dedicated eye unit. This includes 8 outpatient consulting rooms, 3 treatment rooms with associated investigation rooms. There is also a state of the art operating theatre making day procedures, such as cataracts, much more accessible to communities who live in Stratford upon Avon and the surrounding communities.

Prof. Misson is no stranger to academic accolades; in addition to his medical qualifications he has a first-class honours degree in mathematics and a PhD in bio-optical engineering. Keen to share his expertise to benefit others, Prof. Misson has also had more than 50 papers published in peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored a textbook on eye pathology.

Recognising his colleagues Prof. Misson said: “The award is not only a personal honour, but also reflects on the status of the Eye Department of Warwick Hospital where patients currently receive excellent treatment. The team here is constantly embracing innovation and is made up of staff who are leaders in their field. Combined with the new developments at Stratford Hospital, SWFT is fast becoming a centre of ophthalmic excellence to rival any in the country.”
