Trust celebrate Nurse of the Year award on international nurses day

Nurses at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT) are celebrating after winning one of the professions most prestigious awards.

The Trust’s Aylesford Unit Nursing Team have been awarded the Cancer Nursing Award at the RCNi Nurse Awards 2016. The national award is for nurses who care for and treat patients with cancer. The team were recognised for the comprehensive acute oncology and chemotherapy service that they have developed at Warwick Hospital. Sharing the category with talented nurses and teams from across the country, winning the award is a huge achievement.

Nurse consultant Carole Connor, who leads the team, said: “The nursing team and I were so pleased to receive the RCNi Cancer Nursing Award. This award recognises innovation and excellence in nursing so there were some extremely good nurses in all categories.

“We never forget that our patients and their carers are at the heart of what we do. As a team we are whole heartedly committed to delivering the best possible care to these patients and carers. Achieving this would not have been possible without the continued support from our medical staff and other health professionals who make an essential contribution to our services.

Monica Burchell, Macmillan Development Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, added: “Being diagnosed with cancer can be devastating. So when you’re going through treatment, to know that you have people striving to improve your experience of care is really reassuring. It’s great for people in South Warwickshire to see the hard work of their local hospital team recognised.”

Building on their success, the Trust has commissioned the team to open another unit which will be housed within the £22m Stratford Hospital which is currently being developed and is due for completion in spring 2017.

The award is being celebrated as part of wider recognition of nurses as SWFT marks this year’s Nurses’ Day. The outstanding contribution of nursing staff is being acknowledged with a range of events that are taking part at the Trust’s hospital sites and community locations throughout Warwickshire.

Director of Nursing Helen Lancaster said: “I get to see first-hand the professional and compassionate care that is provided by our Aylesford Unit Nursing Team so I’m thrilled that it has been recognised by such a respected organisation. The team embodies what nursing is about at SWFT so Nurses’ Day is a great opportunity to celebrate all of our nursing staff and the difference they make to our patients every day.”
