Trust Directors run for new birthing centre

Two Directors from South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust are taking on the Two Castles 10km run 10 years after first completing it.

On Sunday 11 June Jayne Blacklay, Director of Development and Helen Lancaster, Director of Nursing, will run between Warwick Castle and Kenilworth Castle. This time around they are fundraising for the Birth & Babies Appeal after supporting an earlier Warwick Hospital Children’s appeal a decade ago.

The Birth & Babies Appeal is fundraising £200,000 for enhancements to Warwick Hospital’s new on-site birthing centre, due to open in early 2018. The new centre will have four birthing rooms each with their own en suite facilities, birthing pool and a dedicated active birth space with specialist equipment to help women to find comfortable upright positions. In addition drop down double beds and cots will enable women, their partner and new baby to comfortably get to know each other in the first few hours. One of the items that will be purchased through fundraising will a comfortable sofa and chair for each room, these cost £1000 each. The two Directors have already managed to raise over £950 through their Just Giving page.

Helen Lancaster, joined the Trust 14 years ago as Head of Midwifery and is still passionate about maternity and midwife led services such as this, she said: “I have been amazed at the generosity of people sponsoring our run, we only have a year to raise £200,000 so every penny will make such a difference in making the unit the best that it can possibly be.”

Jayne Blacklay, said: “We wanted take on this challenge again after doing it 10 years ago. The new birthing centre will ensure that we can give families more choice where they birth and is something that we have wanted to develop at the Trust for many years”.
