UNICEF recognise high quality breastfeeding support in Solihull
The recent awarding of UNICEF’s Baby Friendly accreditation to the Solihull Healthy Child Programme Service has shown that families in Solihull are benefitting from high-quality breastfeeding support.
UNICEF Baby Friendly works with children’s services to ensure that they are delivering effective advice. A significant focus of this is on feeding and relationships between parents/carers and children. This is because the way we feed our babies and the relationships that we have with them has an incredible impact on their future, protecting their health and development whilst forming important secure attachments. This positive impact extends beyond childhood into adolescence and even adult years, giving each child the best chance in life.
The prestigious accreditation was awarded for a third time, highlighting the Solihull Healthy Child Programme Service’s proven track record of offering first class support for local families. The service, provided by South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust and commissioned by Solihull Council, includes Health Visiting, Infant Feeding and Family Nurse services.
Infant Feeding Co-ordinator Elaine Kindred-Spalding was presented with the award by the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Flo Nash, at an event at the Health Hub, Chelmsley Wood Library. The Mayor said: “This is fantastic news for families in the borough and a big thanks needs to go to the Infant Feeding team, Health Visitors and Family Nurses. It is a great accomplishment for all those involved and demonstrates how committed we are to supporting mums to give their babies the very best start in life.”
Elaine Kindred-Spalding added: ‘Breastfeeding can significantly improve a child’s development so it’s really important that parents are aware of its impact and receive any support needed for their child to benefit from it. The accreditation is recognition that this is happening locally; it highlights the excellent care that is provided and demonstrates the difference that our services make to families in Solihull.’
Solihull Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, Councillor Karen Grinsell said: “We are incredibly proud to have retained our UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation for the third time. It is testament to the dedication and professionalism of our frontline healthcare staff who are actively supporting new mums who want to breastfeed, helping them to do so for as long as they wish to.
“Their work is making a big difference to local families which is why the breastfeeding rate in Solihull is higher than the England average at six to eight weeks of a child’s life.”
