South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trusts (SWFT) Medical Education team recently welcomed 40 local young people interested in a career in Medicine to a one-day Medical Workshop at Acorn House, Warwick Hospital. Demand for the workshop was exceptionally strong, with more applications received than the places available, demonstrating the enthusiasm of local young people for careers in Medicine.
The event provided students with an insight into life as a doctor, from hearing directly from current medical students and clinicians to taking part in practical skills sessions covering airway, breathing and circulation. Students also participated in simulation-based learning, debated ethical dilemmas and explored the impact of emerging technologies on the future of healthcare.
Judith Morris, Head of Medical Education, led a lively ethics debate, encouraging students to consider complex issues around NHS finances, resource allocation and decision-making in children's healthcare. Students also took part in simulation-based learning led by Trust clinicians, heard about careers in surgery from a consultant surgeon, and explored the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in medicine using immersive technology.
The workshop was led by Dr Hannah Webber and was supported by medical students from the University of Buckingham Medical School, to share their experiences and answer questions about life as a medical student. Dr Hannah Webber, Specialist Doctor said, "Medicine can feel out of reach for many young people, particularly those without personal connections to the profession. By giving students the chance to meet doctors, develop practical skills and see what's really involved in a medical career, we can help build confidence, raise aspirations and inspire the diverse NHS workforce of the future."
The workshop forms part of SWFT's commitment to widening participation and inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals. By providing opportunities for local young people to engage with clinicians and experience aspects of medical training first-hand, SWFT hope to encourage talented students from all backgrounds to consider a future career in Medicine.
